Dr. Jasmine Jones serves as Associate Professor of Computer Science at Berea College, where she is the founding faculty director of the Berea College Makerspace, a collaborative STEAM workspace. She received her Ph.D. in Information Science from the University of Michigan in 2017, with a dissertation titled “Crafting a Narrative Inheritance: A Design Framework for Intergenerational Family Memory,” advised by Dr. Mark S. Ackerman. Previously, she held a B.S. in Computer Science and a B.A. in Interdisciplinary Studies: “Human-Computer Interaction in an International Cultural Context” from the University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC) in 2012. Following her doctorate, Jones was a Postdoctoral Research Associate at the GroupLens Research Center in the Computer Science Department at the University of Minnesota from 2017 to 2019, before joining Berea College as Assistant Professor in 2019.
Jones's research addresses sociotechnical challenges of embedded computing in everyday life, focusing on human-centered computing areas such as digitally-mediated collective remembering, multi-generational storytelling, self-tracking for recovery and wellness, and cultural values in design. Her publications appear in top conferences including ACM CHI, CSCW, and GROUP. Notable works include “Co-constructing Family Memory: Understanding the Intergenerational Practices of Passing on Family Memory” (CHI 2018, Best Paper Honorable Mention), “Learning from Family Mysteries: Accounting for Untold Stories in Family Memory Practices” (Proc. ACM Hum.-Comput. Interact. 2020), “Be Consistent, Work the Program, Be Present Every Day: Exploring Technologies for Self-Tracking in Early Recovery” (Proc. ACM Interact. Mob. Wearable Ubiquitous Technol. 2022), and “Curating an Infinite Basement: Understanding How People Manage Collections of Sentimental Artifacts” (GROUP 2016). She has earned prestigious awards such as the NSF Graduate Research Fellowship (2013-2016), Rackham Merit Fellowship, GEM Fellowship, and the Willie Hobbs Moore Trailblazer Award (2016). At Berea, she emphasizes experiential learning, community-engaged service-learning, project-based curricula, undergraduate research, and cross-cultural faculty-led travel. Jones holds leadership positions including Faculty Representative at-large on the Executive Council (2022-2025), Labor Coordinator for the Computer Science Department, and advisor to the National Society of Black Engineers.
