Rate My Professor Jason Charng

From 2015 to 2019, Charng was a Postdoctoral Fellow at the Center for Hereditary Retinal Degenerations, Scheie Eye Institute, University of Pennsylvania, under the mentorship of Artur V. Cideciyan. Since 2020, he has been Senior Lecturer and unit coordinator for the Discipline of Optometry at The University of Western Australia. His research interests encompass functional and structural assessments of the eye in preparation for retinal gene therapy, epidemiology, and enhancing eye care access for the general population. Notable publications include “Anatomy- versus Sensitivity-Based Loci Preselection in Detecting USH2A-Retinopathy Microperimetric Progression” (2026, Ophthalmology Science), “Artificial intelligence techniques in inherited retinal diseases: a review” (2025, Biomedical Physics and Engineering Express), “Eye health literacy across the world and in Australia” (2026, Clinical and Experimental Optometry), “Evaluating ocular health in retinal gene therapies” (2025, Clinical and Experimental Optometry), and “The effect of near work on the anterior eye and associations with myopia: a narrative review” (2025, Clinical and Experimental Optometry). Awards include the 2023 Establishing pupillometry as a clinical outcome measure prize, 2015 David Hay Postgraduate Write-up Award from the University of Melbourne, 2012 Melbourne University Overseas Research Experience Scholarship, 2011 Australian Postgraduate Award, and 2008 Melbourne Research Scholarship. He serves as Associate Editor for Clinical and Experimental Optometry and Editorial Board Member for The Asia-Pacific Journal of Ophthalmology, and supervises PhD and MPhil students while leading projects such as “Improving eye health literacy in Western Australian disadvantaged communities” funded by the Perth Eye Foundation.
