Jason Harris

Jason Harris is Professor of Corporate Law at the University of Sydney Law School, where he teaches and researches corporate law and insolvency law. Appointed in 2019, he previously held academic positions at the University of New South Wales, Australian National University, and University of Technology Sydney, along with visiting appointments in Canada, England, Singapore, and the United States. He earned a BA and LLB from Western Sydney University, an LLM from the Australian National University, and a PhD from the University of Adelaide. Harris holds professional designations including MAICD, FGIA, FCG, and FAAL.

His research specializations encompass the public and private regulation of financially distressed companies, directors’ duties, corporate groups, bankruptcy, commercial law, and secured transactions. As Director of the Ross Parsons Centre of Commercial, Corporate and Taxation Law, he advances scholarship in these fields. Harris has authored or contributed to 13 books and over 100 scholarly and professional papers, including "Company Law: Theories, Principles and Applications" (3rd ed., 2023) and "Keay's Insolvency: Personal & Corporate Law and Practice" (11th ed., 2022, with Michael Murray). His work is frequently cited in Australian courts, including the High Court, and informs parliamentary committees. He actively participates in law reform through roles on committees such as the Insolvency and Restructuring Committee and Corporations Committee of the Business Law Section of the Law Council of Australia, the Law Committee of the Australian Institute of Company Directors, and the Academic Steering Committee of INSOL International. Previously, he served as President of the Corporate Law Teachers’ Association and chair of the academic committee of the Banking and Financial Services Law Association. Harris is an academic member of ARITA and engages in public discourse on corporate regulation and insolvency issues.
