About Jason

Jason Harry serves as the Hugh W. Pearson ’58 Professor of the Practice of Technology and Entrepreneurship in the School of Engineering at Brown University. With over 40 years of experience in the medical device industry and early-stage venturing, he brings a wealth of practical knowledge to his academic role. Harry earned his PhD in Engineering Science from Harvard University in 1988, a Master of Science from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1982, and a Bachelor of Science from the Georgia Institute of Technology in 1980. His early research focused on mechanical and biomedical engineering and biophysics. He first joined Brown University as a faculty member in the 1990s, specializing in biomedical engineering, before returning in 2015 to teach entrepreneurship, innovation management, and the intersections between technology and business at undergraduate, graduate, and executive levels.

Throughout his career, Harry has held key leadership positions in industry, including founder and CEO of Lucidux, LLC, developing advanced visualization technologies for minimally invasive surgery; founder and CEO of Afferent Corporation, focusing on neurostimulation technologies to treat chronic dysfunction from stroke, aging, and diabetes; and Vice President of Research Engineering at NMT Medical, Inc. in Boston, specializing in minimally invasive cardiovascular implants. At Brown, he directed the Breakthrough Lab (B-Lab), a student venture accelerator in the Nelson Center for Entrepreneurship, for seven years. Harry has reviewed funding proposals for the National Science Foundation’s Accelerating Innovation Research—Technology Transfer (AIR-TT) program and the National Institutes of Health Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) program, leveraging his expertise in start-up financing. He authors technology content for the Wall Street Journal’s “Critical Thinking Resources” for university faculty and serves as an early-stage business development consultant. In 2018, he received the Hazeltine Mentoring Award for his impact on young entrepreneurial minds at Brown University.
