Professor Jatswan Singh is a Professor of International Relations in Political Science at Taylor's University College, School of Liberal Arts & Sciences, Faculty of Social Sciences and Leisure Management. He earned his PhD in Studies on Human Rights Issues and Indigenous Politics from the University of Leeds, UK in 2011, MA in Politics of International Resources and Development from the University of Leeds in 1993, MA in Burmese History from Universiti Malaya in 1993, and BA in History from Universiti Malaya in 1989. Previously, as Associate Professor in the Department of International and Strategic Studies, Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences at Universiti Malaya, he held significant administrative positions including Executive Director of the Asia-Europe Institute from May 2020 to January 2022, Director of the Centre for ASEAN Regionalism from January 2019 to December 2020, Deputy Director (Academic) of the Asia-Europe Institute from November 2018 to November 2020, and Head of Department twice in 2007-2009.
Professor Singh's research focuses on international relations, Southeast Asian security dynamics, Myanmar foreign policy and the Rohingya crisis, South Asian nuclear doctrines and crisis stability, ASEAN regionalism, human trafficking, and bilateral relations such as Malaysia-India. Key publications include Historical Dictionary of Brunei Darussalam (3rd Edition, 2016), The United States’ Myanmar Policy after the 2021 Military Coup and its Prospects under China-US Strategic Competition (2023), Regional Middle Powers and ASEAN: Japan, Australia and India (2023), Dynamics of Pakistan’s Nuclear Doctrine: Implications for Strategic Stability in South Asia (2022), Brunei in 2021: The Battle against COVID-19 and a Year of Short-Lived Optimism (2022), Introduction: Problematizing Historicization in Contesting Malaysia's Integration into the World Economy (2021), The Rohingya: Myanmar's Unwanted Minority (2021), and Inside the Crime of Sex Trafficking in Sabah, Malaysia (2021). He has received Universiti Malaya awards including Excellence Service Award (2018), Certificate of Excellent Service (2016), Khidmat Setia 20 Award (2009), and Certificate of Excellent Service (2006). Additionally, he serves as Adjunct Professor at Padjadjaran University (2023-2025) and non-resident Senior Fellow at Rostock University’s Institute for Politics and Administrative Sciences. Professor Singh delivers public lectures and keynotes on topics like BRICS as alternative global governance and regional security.
