Dr Jay Anderson is a Senior Lecturer in the Faculty of Science and Engineering at Southern Cross University. With qualifications including a Bachelor of Horticultural Science (BHortSc) and a PhD from the University of Queensland, Dr Anderson brings over 20 years of experience as a plant pathologist specializing in diseases of tropical and subtropical horticultural crops. Affiliated with the Centre for Organics Research and the Harvest to Health research cluster, Dr Anderson works closely with farmers, industry partners, and colleagues to deliver practical solutions for disease management. Research interests centre on integrated disease management, incorporating plant breeding and selection for resistance, optimized plant nutrition, defence activators, biological control organisms, and detailed studies of pathogen infection processes to target interventions and reduce crop losses. This work supports sustainable horticulture and contributes to United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.
Dr Anderson's scholarly output includes 34 publications with over 400 citations, reflecting significant impact in plant pathology. Key publications encompass 'The pathogenic diversity and host range of Colletotrichum spp. causing pepper spot and anthracnose of lychee (Litchi chinensis) in Australia' (2024, Plant Pathology), 'Effect of in Planta Treatment of ‘Cavendish’ Banana with Herbicides and Fungicides on the Colonisation and Sporulation by Fusarium oxysporum f.sp. cubense Subtropical Race 4' (2021, Journal of Fungi), 'Effects of commercial microbial biostimulants on soil and root microbial communities and sugarcane yield' (2020, Biology and Fertility of Soils), 'Soil biological health - what is it and how can we improve it?' (2017), and 'Morphological and molecular diversity of Colletotrichum spp. causing pepper spot and anthracnose of lychee (Litchi chinensis) in Australia' (2013). Additional contributions include book chapters on lychee, passionfruit, pineapple, and coffee (2009), and the 'Passionfruit Growing Guide' (2011). Recent efforts address blueberry rust (Pucciniastrum minimum), macadamia pests, and Fusarium wilt in bananas using advanced techniques like GFP-tagged strains. Dr Anderson has presented at conferences such as the Crawford Fund Annual Conference and participates in international collaborations, including plant science symposia.
