Dr. Jayne Jones serves as a lecturer in Oral Health and Program Convenor within the School of Health Sciences, Faculty of Health and Medicine, at the University of Newcastle, Australia. A registered dentist with over 39 years of clinical experience, she earned her Bachelor of Dental Surgery from the University of London in 1984. Initially practicing as a general dentist in southern England until 1988, she emigrated to Australia, worked in private practices in Sydney, and established her own dental practice in Pymble, which operated successfully until sold in 2018. She provided oral health education to local schools and preschools and was featured as the dentist in the ABC children’s production Playschool in 2002. In July 2016, she joined the University of Newcastle as a clinical educator in Oral Health, taking a full-time lecturer position early in 2019. During 2018–2019, she worked as a dental officer at Wyong Hospital, mentoring newly graduated dentists and supervising Bachelor of Oral Health Therapy students. In 2022, she returned to a full-time position as lecturer in Oral Health.
Dr. Jones’s research specializations include special needs dentistry, with a particular focus on developing educational modules to improve dental practitioners’ confidence and competence in preventive dental care for persons with Autism Spectrum Disorder. Her key publications are the journal article “Barriers to Oral Health Care for Autistic Individuals—A Scoping Review” published in Healthcare in 2024 and the conference presentation “Barriers to Oral Health for Patients with Autism Spectrum Disorder” in 2023. She has received the Pierre Fauchard Academy International honor in 2017 and the University of Newcastle Wellbeing, Health and Safety teaching award in 2022. Dr. Jones has a extensive career in academic appointments, including course coordination and clinical teaching in subjects such as ORHL2107 OHT Clinical Skills, ORHL3102 OHT Clin Skills, ORHL2102 Oral Pathology, and clinical supervision in the Oral Health Clinic at Ourimbah, emphasizing preventive dentistry and behavior management.
