Jayne Shaw is the Admissions and Outreach Manager in the Department of Bioengineering, Faculty of Engineering, at Imperial College London. She joined the department in May 2020, following over ten years of experience in access and outreach at the University of Oxford in the Departments of Chemistry and Materials Science. Shaw began her professional career as a Chemistry teacher before transitioning to higher education administration and outreach roles.
In her current position, Shaw manages the undergraduate and postgraduate taught admissions processes for the Bioengineering department. She leads the admissions and outreach team, liaises with college-wide marketing, admissions, and outreach teams, and supports colleagues in delivering and developing outreach events and activities. Her responsibilities include oversight of admissions management, organization of outreach events, and schools liaison. Shaw is passionate about widening participation and access to higher education, working with schools and colleges to inspire the next generation of bioengineers. She also contributes as the Engagement Manager for the department's societal engagement champions. At Oxford, as Access and Outreach Manager for the Department of Materials, she coordinated undergraduate admissions, provided admissions talks, developed virtual outreach resources including recordings of open day presentations, and organized teacher events such as the Making Materials Matter workshop. She facilitated student taster days with hands-on sessions on materials design, catalysis workshops, and forensics activities. Shaw co-authored the article 'Making Materials Matter' published in the School Science Review in 2019, detailing a collaborative project to advance materials science education in schools. Her outreach efforts have fostered engagement in STEM disciplines across both institutions. Outside of work, Shaw enjoys walking and cycling, especially routes ending at a pub, and competed in the original UK Polaris Mountain bike challenge.
