Jean (Jonathan) Bogais is an Adjunct Associate Professor in the Discipline of Sociology and Criminology, School of Social and Political Sciences, Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences at the University of Sydney. He earned a PhD in Sociology and an MA in Social and Intercultural Psychology from Paris-Sorbonne. With over 35 years of experience as an academic and practitioner working in spaces of violence, particularly political violence, Bogais served as Associate Professor of Sociology at the University of Sydney from 2012 to 2023. He is a founding member and key academic of the Centre for International Security Studies, contributing to research in ecosecurity, infosecurity, and regional security. Bogais has delivered specialist courses on the psychology of recruitment by terrorist organisations at the University of Sydney, Australian Defence, and Nanyang Technological University in Singapore. He previously served as a psycho-sociologist special adviser to the UN during the 1991 Paris Peace Agreement negotiations to end the conflict in Cambodia and worked as a foreign correspondent for AFP and CBC.
Bogais's academic interests encompass ethics, sociology of culture and emotions, international security, political violence, negotiation, information warfare, and dynamic modelling, with a focus on Southeast Asia including Myanmar, Cambodia, Thailand, and the Philippines. He was a member of the University of Sydney's Human Research Ethics Committee from 2016 to 2021 and holds senior non-resident appointments such as Senior Fellow at RSIS, Nanyang Technological University, and Senior Research Fellow at the German-Southeast Asian Center of Excellence for Good Governance and Policy, Thammasat University. Recognized as an expert on extremism, terrorism, and international security, he provides commentary for media outlets including Channel News Asia, CNBC, and CNN, and acts as an expert for national and international tribunals. Key publications include co-authorship of 'Ratcatchers, Regulators, and Zealots – A Hitchhiker’s Guide to Cyber T&E' (2019).
