Rate My Professor Jeanette King

Jeanette King is a Professor at the University of Canterbury in the Aotahi School of Māori and Indigenous Studies within the Faculty of Arts. She has held her position at the university since February 1996 and currently serves as Associate Dean (Academic) in the Faculty of Arts, a role she has occupied since May 2023. Previously, she served as Head of School from September 2021 to May 2023.

King earned her PhD from the University of Canterbury in 2007. Her doctoral dissertation is titled “Eke ki runga i te waka: The use of dominant metaphors by newly-fluent Māori speakers in historical perspective.” Her research focuses on the Māori language, including the worldview of second language speakers of Māori, indigenous language revitalization, bilingualism, and language maintenance. She has contributed to projects examining knowledge among non-Māori-speaking New Zealanders and developed tools such as a part of speech tagger for Māori. King maintains an active academic profile with numerous publications and grants in these areas.
