Associate Professor Jeanne Snelling holds qualifications of LLB(Hons), PhD (Otago), and RCompN. With a background of ten years as a Registered Nurse specializing in Intensive Care, she joined the Faculty of Law at the University of Otago in 2018 as a Lecturer, holding a joint appointment with the Bioethics Centre. She progressed to Senior Lecturer from 2018 to 2023 and became Associate Professor prior to commencing a full-time position in the Faculty of Law in 2021. She serves as convenor of the Masters in Bioethics and Health Law, leads health law teaching in the medical school and allied health professions, and co-teaches Bioethics and the Life Sciences. Her teaching portfolio includes Law and Medicine, An Introduction to Law and New Technologies, Criminal Law, and Law and the Biosciences.
Jeanne Snelling's research interests encompass health law and the regulation of biomedical technologies, including ethical and legal issues in reproduction, law and genetics, health law, and law and genetic modification. Her PhD thesis, completed in 2012 at the University of Otago, is titled Parental Preferences and Procreative Choices: Reproductive Technologies and the Regulation of Preimplantation Genetic Diagnosis. She has published extensively on these topics, with key works including 'Health care providers’ early experiences of assisted dying in Aotearoa New Zealand: an evolving clinical service' (2023, BMC Palliative Care), 'The practice of surrogacy in New Zealand' (2012, Australian and New Zealand Journal of Obstetrics and Gynaecology), 'Beyond criminalisation: abortion law reform in Aotearoa New Zealand' (2022, Medical Law Review), 'What do health care professionals want to know about assisted dying? Setting the research agenda in New Zealand' (2023, BMC Palliative Care), and 'The End of Life Choice Act: a proposed implementation and research agenda' (2021, New Zealand Medical Journal). She chairs the Ethics Committee on Assisted Reproductive Technology (ECART), appointed in 2023 after joining as a member in 2022.
