Jed Duff is a Conjoint Associate Professor in the School of Nursing and Midwifery within the College of Health, Medicine and Wellbeing at the University of Newcastle. He earned a Doctor of Philosophy from the Australian Catholic University and a Bachelor of Nursing from Charles Sturt University. A registered nurse for over 20 years, Duff identifies as a 'pracademic' who combines practitioner and academic perspectives to address real-world healthcare challenges. Prior to his roles at the University of Newcastle, he served as Senior Research Fellow at St Vincent's Private Hospital Sydney from 2010 to 2017, where he developed, tested, and implemented evidence-based practice strategies, conducted multidisciplinary research, and mentored staff. At the University of Newcastle, he has been Deputy Head of School (Postgraduate) since May 2019, Program Convenor for the Master of Nursing from 2017 to 2019, and holds an adjunct appointment as Associate Professor at the University of Iowa College of Nursing since 2018. From 2014 to 2016, he was an NHMRC Translating Research into Practice Fellow, establishing a collaborative improvement program across St Vincent’s Health Australia hospitals.
Duff's research emphasizes improving patient care through multidisciplinary health service research, focusing on implementation science, knowledge translation, evidence-based practice, perioperative care, acute care, and nursing. He established the postgraduate Knowledge Translation course at the University of Newcastle. His contributions include key publications such as 'Implementing a thermal care bundle for inadvertent perioperative hypothermia: a cost-effectiveness analysis' (International Journal of Nursing Studies, 2019), 'Effect of a thermal care bundle on the prevention, detection, and treatment of perioperative inadvertent hypothermia' (Journal of Clinical Nursing, 2018), 'Nursing management: Preoperative care' (chapter, 2019), and 'Common Quantitative Methods' (chapter, 2020). Duff has received awards including the 2018 Fulbright Scholarship (visiting University of Iowa), Australian College of Perioperative Nurses Biannual Excellence in Perioperative Nursing Award (team, 2016), Australian Private Hospitals Association Baxter Quality and Safety Award (2008), and Fellow of the Australian College of Perioperative Nurses (2014-present). He is Editor of the Journal of Perioperative Nursing since 2019, past President of the Australian College of Perioperative Nurses (2014-2016), former Board Member of the International Federation of Perioperative Nurses, and former Deputy Chair of the Coalition of National Nursing and Midwifery Organisations.
