Professor Jennifer Hammond is the Professor of Veterinary Education in the School of Biodiversity, One Health & Veterinary Medicine at the University of Glasgow. She serves as Deputy Head of School and Director of the Bachelor of Veterinary Medicine and Surgery (BVMS) Programme. Hammond's career began as a practicing veterinarian specializing in small animal general practice and emergency out-of-hours settings. She joined the University of Glasgow as a University Teacher, supporting final-year veterinary students during their rotations at the People's Dispensary for Sick Animals (PDSA) clinic in Glasgow. Subsequently, she contributed to a curriculum change project for the BVMS programme while completing a part-time Doctorate in Health Professions Education. Her academic qualifications include VetMB, MA, FHEA, and MRCVS. Hammond progressed through the ranks from Lecturer to Senior Lecturer, achieving promotion to Professor in 2023, while maintaining a part-time, term-time contract to accommodate family life.
Hammond's research focuses on veterinary education, encompassing training for uncertainty, ambiguity tolerance, digital professionalism, clinical skills assessment, and student-staff partnerships. Key publications include 'The ubiquity of uncertainty: a scoping review on how undergraduate health professions' students engage with uncertainty' (2021, Advances in Health Sciences Education), 'Development of a New Scale to Measure Ambiguity Tolerance in Veterinary Students' (2017, Journal of Veterinary Medical Education), 'It’s okay to not know … a qualitative exploration of faculty approaches to working with uncertainty' (2022, BMC Medical Education), 'Partnering with veterinary students to enhance clinical workplace learning: development of a learning environment champions initiative' (2025, Journal of Learning Development in Higher Education), and 'Rabbit neutering in primary-care education: insights from a surgical clinic' (2018, Journal of Veterinary Medical Education). She has influenced the field through presentations at international conferences such as VetEd Symposium and AAVMC Iverson Bell Symposium, co-founding the Council on International Veterinary Medical Education (CIVME), and serving on the editorial board of the Journal of Veterinary Medical Education from 2018 to 2023.
