Dr Jennifer Shand is a Senior Lecturer in the Graduate School of Education at the University of Western Australia. She has coordinated units in English Curriculum I and II since 2015 and previously coordinated the Master of Teaching (Secondary) and Graduate Diploma in Education from 2017 to 2022. Shand developed units on Contemporary Pedagogies and Practices and General Capabilities Across the Curriculum for secondary initial teacher education. Her academic background includes a Doctor of Philosophy awarded in 2012 by the University of Western Australia for her thesis 'From Essay to Resume: A Study of Genre and Discursive Positioning in Senior School English,' a Graduate Diploma of Education in 1992, a Master of Letters in 1987 on 'The Search for Female Identity: A study of the works of Dorothy Hewitt,' and a Bachelor of Social Science in 1984. Before her university appointment, she taught English from years 7 to 12 and Literature from years 11 to 12, performing strongly in WACE assessments as a school-based English and Literature year level coordinator, Head of Learning Area, and Assistant Director. She also gained extensive experience in the vocational education and training sector, leading a professional development team in TAFE NSW.
Shand's research specializations encompass literature education, writing pedagogy, young adult fiction and reading, and preservice teacher education and mentoring. She supervises higher degree research students on topics including secondary English, learning environments, writing and grammar pedagogy and instruction, pastoral care, and Australian Professional Standards for Teachers, with recent graduates receiving commendations such as an Honourable mention for the UWA Graduate Research School Dean’s List and the Fogarty Student Research Prize. Key publications include 'A grounded theory about how teachers communicated high expectations to their secondary school students' (2024, European Journal of Psychology of Education, with Olivia Johnston and Helen Wildy), 'A cycle of insecurity: Primary teachers’ practices and resources for the teaching of written grammar' (2024, Language and Education, with Jeannine Wishart and Grace Oakley), 'Learning environments for the English learning area: perspectives of secondary students who struggle with writing' (2024, Australian Journal of Language and Literacy, with Grace Oakley and Emma Purvis), and 'The Use of Orang Asli Mother Tongue in Community Based Education in Malaysia' (2026, Diaspora, Indigenous and Minority Education, with Keith Wei Jun Chin and Grace Oakley). Her awards include Mentoring Education Students Placed In Disadvantaged Schools – Alumni People’s Choice Winner (2017), Graduate School of Education Award for Research Mentorship (2023), FABLE Excellence in Teaching (2020), Contribution to Student Learning Award (2020), and Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (2020). Shand served as Chief Examiner for Literature in WACE examinations from 2015 to 2019 and Chief Marker from 2012 to 2015, and was a member of the Literature Course Advisory Committee with the School Curriculum and Standards Authority (WA) from 2010 to 2022. She delivers professional development on World Literature and Literary Close Reading, presents at conferences, and engages in international collaborations such as Collaborative Online International Learning projects with Universitas Negeri Jakarta and Durban University of Technology on World Literature and cultural pedagogies.
