Dr Jerram Bateman is a Senior Research Fellow in the Social and Behavioural Research Unit and the HIV Epidemiology Group, both within the Department of Public Health, Faculty of Medicine, University of Otago. He holds a BA, MA, and PhD, all from the University of Otago. His 2012 MA thesis examined the role of sport in development in India, including case studies of cricket projects to promote HIV/AIDS awareness and reduce stigma. His 2017 PhD thesis, titled Rural Livelihoods in Sierra Leone: Longitudinal Insights from Panguma and Kayima, investigated long-term continuity and change in rural livelihoods in Sierra Leone's Eastern Province. PhD fieldwork in 2014 coincided with the West African Ebola outbreak, leading to research on its impacts on rural livelihoods. These experiences established his background in development geography.
A mixed-methods researcher, Bateman has transitioned his expertise to public health. He serves as Director of Supportive Care in the Cancer Society Research Collaboration. Research interests include cancer supportive care, with emphasis on post-treatment services, return to productive life and work after cancer diagnosis, challenges and facilitators in travel for cancer treatment, and provision of supportive care programmes for survivors; HIV/AIDS epidemiology involving analysis and reporting of surveillance data; health geography; and development studies. He participates in projects on tobacco control and retailing, unmet secondary healthcare needs and their impact on general practice, health and wellbeing in tourism, and men's mental health and spirituality. Key publications are Bowden, N., Bateman, J., & Gauld, R. (2025). Quantifying unmet secondary healthcare need in New Zealand: A multi-year population study using administrative data.
