Professor Jian Yang is the Acting Dean and Chair Professor in the Faculty of Science and Technology at Beijing Normal-Hong Kong Baptist University (BNBU). She earned her PhD in Data Science from the Australian National University in 1995. Her distinguished career spans several prestigious institutions: she served as a lecturer at the University of New South Wales from 1993 to 1998, senior research scientist at CSIRO Australia from 1998 to 2000, associate professor at Tilburg University in the Netherlands from 2000 to 2004, and full professor at Macquarie University, Australia, from 2004 to 2025. At Macquarie, she held key leadership roles including inaugural Director of the Data Horizons Research Centre, Founding and Deputy Director of the Applied AI Research Centre, Director of the Industry PhD programme at the national Digital Finance Cooperative Research Centre, and was a member of the executive team of the Computing Research and Education Association of Australasia (CORE).
Professor Yang's research specializations encompass data science, machine learning, and service computing, with over 300 publications in top journals and conferences. Her seminal works include 'A comprehensive survey on graph anomaly detection with deep learning' (IEEE TKDE, 2021, 1150 citations), 'A comprehensive survey on community detection with deep learning' (IEEE TNNLS, 2022, 686 citations), 'Algorithms for Materialized View Design in Data Warehousing Environment' (VLDB, 1997, 565 citations), and 'Deep Learning for Community Detection: Progress, Challenges and Opportunities' (IJCAI, 2020, 357 citations). As of December 2025, her Google Scholar profile records over 12,000 citations and an h-index of 52. She has been recognized among the Stanford/Elsevier Top 2% Scientists worldwide since 2019. Professor Yang serves as Editor-in-Chief of the International Journal of Cooperative Information Systems (IJCIS), Associate Editor of IEEE Transactions on Service Computing, and Founding Member and Steering Committee Chair of the International Conference on Service-Oriented Computing (ICSOC).
