About Jianxin

Professor Jianxin Pan holds the position of Chair Professor and Vice President (Research and Development) at Beijing Normal-Hong Kong Baptist University (BNBU), where he also directs the Guangdong Provincial Key Laboratory of Interdisciplinary Research and Application for Data Science. His distinguished career includes serving as Chair Professor of Statistics and Head of the Probability and Statistics Group at the University of Manchester from 2006 to 2021. There, he was a member of the Senior Leadership Team of the School of Mathematics and Director of Internationalization for the Department of Mathematics. Prior appointments encompass senior roles at Keele University (Lecturer, 2000-2002), research associate at the University of St Andrews (1999-2000), postdoctoral fellowship at Rothamsted Research (UK), and faculty positions at the University of Bath, Chinese University of Hong Kong, and Chinese Academy of Sciences. He obtained his BSc in Mathematics from Yunnan University, MSc in Statistics from the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and PhD in Statistics from Hong Kong Baptist University in 1996.

Professor Pan's research focuses on statistical modeling, statistical learning, and data science, with applications in medicine, public health, finance, and industry. He has published over 130 peer-reviewed articles and three monographs with publishers such as Springer and Science Press. Key publications include "Growth Curve Models and Statistical Diagnostics" (2002), "On Modelling Mean-Covariance Structures in Longitudinal Studies" (2003, Biometrika), "Modelling of Covariance Structures in Generalised Estimating Equations for Longitudinal Data" (2006, Biometrika), and editorship of "Contemporary Experimental Design, Multivariate Analysis and Data Mining" (2020). He has attracted funding from UK and European research councils and supervised more than 20 PhD students and 50 MSc/MPhil students. Among his honors are Fellowship of the Royal Statistical Society, election to the International Statistical Institute, and chairmanship of the Royal Statistical Society Greater Manchester Local Group (2011-2013). Professor Pan serves on editorial boards of journals including Biometrics (2008-2018), Journal of Multivariate Analysis (2019-), and Electronic Journal of Statistics (2022-).
