About Jinn-Pyng

Jinn-Pyng Ueng is a distinguished professor and administrator in aquaculture and fishery science, currently serving as President of the Ching Kuo Institute of Management & Health since August 2021. He earned his PhD, MS, and BS degrees in fishery science from National Taiwan Ocean University. His academic career began as a lecturer in the Department of Aquaculture at National Penghu University of Science and Technology in 1981, advancing to assistant professor in 1992 and full professor in 2007. Ueng held key administrative positions, including Teaching Group Leader at National Kaohsiung Marine University Penghu Branch (1981-1984), Night Department Director at National Penghu Institute of Maritime Management (1989-1990), Dean of Student Affairs at National Penghu Institute of Technology (1990-1994), Director of the Cage Net Aquaculture Industry Technology R&D Center (1995-1998), and Dean of the College of Ocean Resources and Engineering for two terms (2009-2015). He served as President of National Penghu University of Science and Technology from August 2017 to July 2021. Ueng's research focuses on fish neurophysiology, bioacoustics, shellfish and seaweed aquaculture, and marine environmental monitoring. Notable publications include 'The sponge microbiome within the greater coral reef microbial metacommunity' (Nature Communications, 2019), 'Biodiversity pattern of subtidal sponges in the Penghu Archipelago' (Journal of the Marine Biological Association of the United Kingdom, 2016), 'Proximate Composition, Total Phenolic Content, and Antioxidant Activity of Seagrape (Caulerpa lentillifera)' (Journal of Food Science, 2011), 'Characterization of Sounds of the Blackspotted Croaker' (Zoological Studies, 2009), and 'Sexual difference in the courtship calls of Japanese croaker' (Zoological Studies, 2007). His work has advanced commercial aquaculture techniques for species like pharaoh cuttlefish, giant oysters, penguin wing oysters, sea grapes, and blacklip pearl oysters, as well as cage net systems.

Ueng has received significant honors, including the Ministry of Education's special flexible salary for exceptional talent (2010-2012, totaling NT$1.5 million) and a service contribution award (2004). As dean, his college achieved top ratings in the Ministry of Education's 2011 institutional evaluation. He led the 'Vibrant Anemonefish' student team to a silver award in the National Science Council's 2013 Innovation and Entrepreneurship Incentive Program, securing NT$1 million in startup funds and NT$50 million in foreign investment, establishing a global leader in clownfish production. Ueng's leadership emphasizes practical training, international collaboration, and industry partnerships, enhancing student employability through certifications and innovative projects.
