Professor Jo-anne Brien, BPharm, BS(Pharm), PharmD, FRPharmS, is an Honorary Professor in the Sydney Pharmacy School, Faculty of Medicine and Health, at the University of Sydney. She holds the inaugural Chair in Clinical Pharmacy (St Vincent's Hospital) since 2000 and is an Adjunct Professor and Conjoint Professor of Medicine at St Vincent’s Hospital Clinical School, UNSW Sydney. Her professional journey began in oncology pharmacy in Sydney, followed by postgraduate clinical research training in the United States focusing on pharmacokinetics in cancer. She subsequently held an academic appointment at Monash University before joining the University of Sydney.
Professor Brien's academic interests center on clinical pharmacy, quality use of medicines, health services research, drug access and policy, medication adherence and safety, and chronic illness management, with studies in resource-limited settings such as Nepal, Vietnam, and Ethiopia. She has supervised 35 postgraduate research students and produced 170 publications cited over 3,290 times. Key publications include "Pharmacy-led medication reconciliation programmes at hospital transitions: a systematic review and meta-analysis" (Mekonnen et al., Journal of Clinical Pharmacy and Therapeutics, 2016), "Impact of a policy to improve the management of oral medications when patients are fasting before a procedure: an interrupted time series analysis" (To et al., BMJ Open Quality, 2022), "Medicines information services in a resource-limited setting" (Trinh et al., Research in Social and Administrative Pharmacy, 2020), "The use of discrete choice experiments in adherence research: A new solution to an old problem" (Khan et al., Research in Social and Administrative Pharmacy, 2020), "Diabetes-Related Healthcare Services in Nepal—A Qualitative Exploration of Healthcare Professionals’ Opinions" (Sapkota et al., Pharmacy, 2020), and the book chapter "Clinical pharmacy practice: Concepts, history, and development" in Encyclopedia of Pharmacy Practice and Clinical Pharmacy (2019).
Among her honors are the St Vincent’s Clinical School Best Consultant Tutor award (2006) and the SHPA GSK Medal of Merit (2008). She currently chairs the St Vincent’s Hospital Human Research Ethics Committee and is deputy chair of its Drug and Therapeutics Committee, while serving on the NSW Therapeutic Advisory Group Management Committee. Previously, she chaired the NSW Branch of the Society of Hospital Pharmacists of Australia, sat on the Pharmaceutical Benefits Advisory Committee’s Drug Utilisation Sub-Committee, acted as Associate Editor for the Journal of Oncology Pharmacy Practice, and was Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Pharmacy Practice and Research (2006-2013).
