Joe Farrant serves as Operations Manager in Property Services at the University of Otago in Dunedin, New Zealand. He holds multiple roles including Facilities Manager in Property Operations and specifically for University Flats, as well as Electrical Services and Controls Team Leader. These positions involve overseeing trade services such as electrical maintenance, building controls, and facilities management across various campus areas including humanities, sciences, south campus, medical and dental schools.
In 2024, Joe Farrant was welcomed to the Collegiate Accommodation and Collegiate Life Services team at University Flats. As a member of the University Flats team of 15 staff, he contributed to sustainable practices that earned the Award for Sustainable Practice by Staff. The team's innovations included a Drop and Swap station for reusing items, period poverty support, and a food recycling program, serving approximately 1,300 students annually. These efforts aligned with university values of manaakitanga, pono, māhirahira, and whakawhanaungatanga, while supporting United Nations Sustainable Development Goals on food security, waste reduction, and community engagement. Additionally, Joe Farrant donated recycled wooden electrical cable spools from university equipment to Balaclava School, enhancing their sustainability-focused playground area called 'the forest' and promoting recycling, reuse, and creative play.
