Joel Soiseth is Professor of Art at Montana State University-Northern in the Arts and Culture field, a position he has held since 1988. He received his B.A. in 1970, B.F.A. in 1980, and M.F.A. in 1983, all from the University of North Dakota. Serving in the College of Education, Arts, Sciences, and Nursing, Soiseth is listed as faculty for the Graphic Design BA program and minor. Holding an MFA, he provides students with real-world industry experience in fine arts, digital illustration, and web design. The program under which he teaches focuses on visual communication, digital design, media production, branding, illustration, and web design, with an emphasis on Adobe Creative Suite, typography, layout, and visual problem-solving. Students receive hands-on training through project-based courses such as Electronic Design, Painting, Digital Image Manipulation, and 3D Printing Applications. Faculty like Soiseth offer one-on-one mentorship in small classes, helping students build professional portfolios presented to a faculty panel before graduation. Partnerships with local organizations including the Havre Daily News, Havre Chamber, and United Way of Hill County provide internship opportunities, and an annual Student Art Show showcases student work.
Soiseth maintains an active presence as a multi-media artist with several exhibitions to his credit. In 2013, he was featured as a special guest artist at the art association show. His paintings were exhibited in the 'Edgy' show at Carroll College in 2014. He was selected for the Across the Divide 2025 exhibition at the Holter Museum of Art representing Montana State University-Northern. Soiseth teaches classes such as Acrylic Painting, leading collaborative projects with students. He has presented Student Excellence Awards at university events and participated in academic senate meetings.
