Dr. Joga Gobburu serves as the Felix Gyi Endowed Memorial Professor in Pharmapreneurship and Professor of Practice, Sciences, and Health Outcomes Research in the Department of Practice, Sciences, and Health Outcomes Research at the University of Maryland School of Pharmacy, Baltimore. He is also the Director of the Center for Translational Medicine. Prior to joining the University of Maryland in 2011, Dr. Gobburu held senior positions as a biomedical research scientist and director of pharmacometrics at the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, gaining unique insights into the technical, regulatory, and decision-making aspects across all phases of drug development. His academic background includes a BPharm and MSc in chemistry from the Birla Institute of Technology and Science, a PhD in pharmaceutical sciences from North Dakota State University in 1996, and an MBA from Johns Hopkins University in 2011.
Dr. Gobburu is recognized worldwide as a scientific leader in quantitative disease models and their applications to decisions, best known for transforming pharmacometrics into a decision-supporting science. His research interests include pediatrics, clinical pharmacology and translational research, comparative effectiveness, and pharmacometrics. He founded the School of Pharmacy's MS in Pharmacometrics program in 2012, the first fully online master's program at the University of Maryland, Baltimore, and directs the MS in Artificial Intelligence for Drug Development. Dr. Gobburu co-founded Pumas-AI, Inc., and VivPro Corporation to aid pharmaceutical scientists, healthcare providers, biotechnology and pharmaceutical companies, and regulatory agencies. His achievements have earned him the University of Maryland, Baltimore's 2024 David J. Ramsay Entrepreneur of the Year award, the 2024 Lewis B. Sheiner Lecturer Award—the highest honor from the International Society of Pharmacometrics—and the American Society for Clinical Pharmacology and Therapeutics' Sheiner-Beal Pharmacometrics Award, along with numerous FDA awards including the Outstanding Achievement Award.
