About Johannes

Johannes Lehmann is the Liberty Hyde Bailey Professor in the School of Integrative Plant Science, Soil and Crop Sciences Section, and Professor in the Global Development Section at Cornell University. He earned his Diplom (M.Sc.) with honors in 1993 and his Ph.D. summa cum laude in 1997, both from the Institute of Soil Science at the University of Bayreuth in Germany. Prior to his appointment at Cornell, he coordinated a research project on nutrient and carbon management in the central Amazon. He joined Cornell University as Assistant Professor in the Department of Crop and Soil Sciences in 2001, was promoted to Associate Professor in 2006, and has served as Professor since that time, also holding the title of International Professor since 2006.

Lehmann’s research centers on soil biogeochemistry and soil fertility management, with emphasis on soil organic matter, nutrient studies, biochar, and black carbon. He served as Editor-in-Chief of the journal Nutrient Cycling in Agroecosystems from 2014 to 2020 and is an Associate Editor for the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. Among his honors are election to the German National Academy of Sciences Leopoldina in 2018, multiple Highly Cited Researcher distinctions from Thomson Reuters and Clarivate, the Hans Fischer Senior Fellowship at the Technical University of Munich from 2016 to 2019, fellowship in the Soil Science Society of America, and the International Research Award from the Soil Science Society of America. He is co-editor of the book Biochar for Environmental Management, including its revised editions.
