John Crittenden is a professor in the School of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the Georgia Institute of Technology, holding the Georgia Research Alliance Eminent Scholar position in Environmental Technologies and the Hightower Chair. He served as executive director of the Brook Byers Institute for Sustainable Systems until August 2022, thereafter continuing as faculty with emphases on education, mentoring, and research. Crittenden's research specializations include sustainable urban infrastructure, water treatment principles and design, infrastructure ecology, the water-energy nexus, and bio-inspired solutions for environmental sustainability. His work employs tools such as big data analytics, crowdsourcing, and ecosystem network analysis to advance scalable technologies for urban water supply and wastewater management.
Crittenden joined Georgia Tech around 2008 and remained until at least 2023, leading initiatives on global water challenges and co-authoring the National Academy of Engineering report on Grand Challenges for Environmental Engineering. He is the primary author of the bestselling textbook Stantec's Water Treatment: Principles and Design (third revised edition, 2022), alongside key publications like "A bibliometric analysis of industrial wastewater treatments from 1998 to 2020" (2021) and "Linear Free Energy Relationships between Aqueous Phase Hydroxyl Radical Reactions and the Gas Phase" (2011). With 51,469 citations on Google Scholar, his contributions have shaped practices in sustainable engineering and policy. Notable appointments include service on the U.S. EPA Science Advisory Board (2012) and participation in workshops on resilience. Major awards encompass the 2015 Clarke Prize from the National Water Research Institute, the 2022 American Chemical Society Honor Award, election to the Chinese Academy of Engineering (2014) as one of few non-natives, and the CAPEES Appreciation Award (2022). Crittenden has presented public lectures, including on gigatechnology for sustainable urban infrastructure.
