John Frow

Professor John Frow is Professor Emeritus in the Discipline of English and Writing within the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences at the University of Sydney. He obtained his Bachelor of Arts from the Australian National University (ANU), followed by a Master of Arts and Doctor of Philosophy from Cornell University. As a Fellow of the Australian Academy of the Humanities (FAHA), Frow has made significant contributions to literary and cultural studies. He previously served as an Australian Research Council (ARC) Professorial Fellow in the Department of English at the University of Sydney. His academic career also includes appointments as Professor of English at the University of Melbourne and the University of Queensland, as well as Director of the Institute for Advanced Studies in the Humanities at the University of Edinburgh from 2000 to 2004.

Frow's research focuses on literary theory and cultural studies. He is a prolific author with key publications including Genre (Routledge, 2015), Character and Person (Oxford University Press, 2014), The Practice of Value (Oxford University Press, 2015), On Interpretive Conflict (University of Chicago Press, 2019), Cultural Studies and Cultural Value (Oxford University Press, 1995), and Marxism and Literary History (Harvard University Press, 1986). These works explore topics such as genre theory, value regimes, interpretive practices, and the intersections of culture and literature. Frow has over 100 publications listed on ResearchGate, with more than 1,700 citations, underscoring his influence in the field. He has co-edited Cultural Studies Review and contributed to numerous scholarly journals and edited collections. His scholarship has shaped debates in cultural analysis, narrative theory, and intellectual property within literary contexts.
