Rate My Professor John Gyourko

John Gyourko is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Social Work at James Madison University. He earned a PhD in Social Welfare from the University of Pennsylvania School of Social Policy & Practice in 2024, an MSW from Virginia Commonwealth University School of Social Work in 2020, and a BS in Psychology from Virginia Tech College of Science in 2008. Prior to his current appointment, Gyourko held research fellow and co-investigator positions at the University of Pennsylvania and other institutions, along with roles in youth services, family support, and behavioral health at organizations including the Virginia Department of Social Services.

Gyourko’s scholarship addresses topics at the intersection of child maltreatment, consumer financial protection, economic inequality, and public policy, with special emphasis on financial social work and child/youth services. He maintains professional affiliations with the American Psychological Association, American Society of Criminology, Council on Social Work Education, International Research Network on Transitions to Adulthood from Care, National Association of Social Workers, Phi Beta Kappa, and Society for Social Work and Research.
