John J. Hopfield is the 2024 Nobel Laureate in Physics and serves as Howard A. Prior Professor in the Life Sciences, Professor of Molecular Biology, and Associated Faculty in the Princeton Neuroscience Institute, Emeritus, at Princeton University. He earned a B.A. from Swarthmore College and a Ph.D. from Cornell University. Hopfield joined the Princeton faculty in the Department of Physics in 1964 after earlier positions at Bell Labs and the University of California, Berkeley. He later held appointments at the California Institute of Technology in chemistry and biology from 1980 to 1997 before returning to Princeton in 1997, where he contributed to the establishment of the Princeton Neuroscience Institute. His research has centered on neural networks, with the introduction of the Hopfield network in 1982 providing a foundational model for associative memory and influencing subsequent developments in machine learning and artificial intelligence. Hopfield has also worked at the intersection of physics, molecular biology, neuroscience, and systems biology. In addition to the Nobel Prize, his honors include the Benjamin Franklin Medal in Physics and the Queen Elizabeth Prize for Engineering.
