Professor John Horvath is an Honorary Professor of Medicine at the University of Sydney, specializing in renal medicine. He obtained his Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) from the University of Sydney in 1968 and holds Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians (FRACP). Throughout his career, Horvath served as a specialist renal physician at Royal Prince Alfred Hospital in Sydney for over 30 years, including as Director of Renal and Transplant Services from 1997 to 2003, during which he elevated the hospital's profile as a premier kidney transplantation facility. He previously held the position of Clinical Professor of Medicine and Professor of Renal Medicine at the University of Sydney, contributing to medical education, specialist training, and research in nephrology.
In September 2003, Horvath was appointed Chief Medical Officer of the Australian Government Department of Health and Ageing, serving until 2009 and providing principal advice on public health policy, medical research, workforce planning, quality of care, and pandemic preparedness; he chaired the National Influenza Pandemic Action Committee. Prior roles include President of the Australian Medical Council, President of the NSW Medical Board, and Chair of the Australian Medical Workforce Advisory Committee. Subsequently, he acted as Principal Medical Consultant to the Commonwealth Department of Health, Group Chief Medical Officer at Ramsay Health Care until 2021, and Global Strategic Medical Advisor to Ramsay Health Care. Horvath led key government reviews, including the 2014 Review of Medicare Locals recommending Primary Health Networks and the 2014-2015 Review of Medicines and Medical Devices Regulation influencing Therapeutic Goods Administration reforms. His research focuses on hypertension, kidney transplantation, renoprotective strategies, and rare renal conditions, with publications such as 'Peripheral neuropathy complicating primary hyperoxaluria' (1976), 'Effect of Hemodialysis on Left Ventricular Function in End-Stage Renal Failure' (1980), and 'Hypertension in pregnancy and long-term cardiovascular mortality' (2016). Awards include Officer of the Order of Australia (AO) in 2001 for service to medicine, particularly hypertension, and the 2014 Special Award for National Leadership from DonateLife.
