John T. Mims serves as Chair and Professor of the Practice in the Department of Strategic Communication within High Point University’s Nido R. Qubein School of Communication. He joined the faculty as a full-time assistant professor in 2016, after serving as an adjunct instructor in 2015 in both the School of Communication and the Earl N. Phillips School of Business, teaching public relations and marketing courses. Bringing over 20 years of professional experience in corporate and agency communication, Mims has developed and implemented strategic communication plans for large corporate clients and non-profit organizations. His practical background informs his teaching approach, emphasizing real-world applications in strategic communication.
Mims earned a Bachelor of Arts in Journalism and Mass Communication from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and a Master of Business Administration from Pfeiffer University. He is recognized as an expert in crisis communication and social media communication. An accredited member of the Public Relations Society of America (PRSA), Mims has served on the board of the local PRSA chapter. At High Point University, he fosters experiential learning through assignments that replicate professional strategic communication challenges. Mims led the formation of Ascension336, a student-run communication agency providing services to non-profit clients. He has also advised student teams, including the PRSSA chapter, contributing to their recognition such as features on local media and honorable mentions in national competitions like the PRSA Bateman Case Study Competition. Additionally, as department chair, he participates in faculty searches and presents on topics like AI-enhanced learning in communication education.
