John Moser, Ph.D., is Professor of History and Chair of the History and Political Science Department at Ashland University, positions he has held since joining the faculty in 2001. He also chairs the Master of Arts in American History and Government program. Moser earned his B.A. in history and telecommunications from Ohio University, an M.A. in history, and a Ph.D. in history from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. He teaches courses in modern European, American, and East Asian history.
Moser's academic interests encompass modern American, East Asian, and European history, with publications on diverse subjects ranging from comic books to Japanese foreign policy. He is the author of four books, including The Great Depression and the New Deal: A Concise History (Ashbrook Press, 2023), The Global Great Depression and the Coming of World War II (Routledge, 2015), Right Turn: John T. Flynn and the Transformation of American Liberalism (New York University Press, 2005), and Twisting the Lion’s Tail: American Anglophobia between the World Wars (New York University Press, 1999). In addition, he has contributed to the Reacting to the Past series by authoring or co-authoring role-playing games such as Japan, 1941: Between Pan-Asianism and the West, Europe on the Brink, 1914: The July Crisis, and Restoring the World, 1945: Security and Empire at Yalta (with Nicolas Proctor). Moser received Ashland University’s Edward and Louaine Taylor Excellence in Teaching Award in 2016 and the Excellence in Scholarship Award in 2022. He has appeared as an expert on the History Channel’s History’s Greatest Mysteries series and participated in the Ashbrook Center’s World War II conference titled “Victory and Defeat: The Final Months of World War II.”
