About John

Professor John Oliffe is a distinguished academic specializing in men's health research. He is Professor and Tier 1 Canada Research Chair in Men's Health Promotion at the University of British Columbia School of Nursing, a position he has held since joining the faculty in 2003. In 2019, he was appointed Honorary Professor in the Department of Nursing within the Melbourne School of Health Sciences at the University of Melbourne. Oliffe's academic qualifications include a PhD in Health Sciences from Deakin University (2004), an MEd, and registration as a nurse (RN) with pediatric nursing training from Victoria University (1996), followed by a postdoctoral fellowship in psycho-social oncology at UBC (2004-2006).

As founder and lead investigator of UBC's Men's Health Research program, Oliffe's work examines masculinities in the context of men's health behaviors, illness management, and family impacts. His research addresses critical areas such as prostate cancer support, men's depression and suicide prevention, anxiety in young men, smoking cessation among fathers, and gender equity in healthcare. With over 550 peer-reviewed publications and more than 17,000 citations, his influential works include 'Constructions of masculinity following prostatectomy-induced impotence' (Social Science & Medicine, 2005), 'Embodied masculinity and androgen deprivation therapy' (Sociology of Health & Illness, 2006), 'Being screened for prostate cancer: A simple blood test or a commitment to treatment?' (Cancer Nursing, 2006), 'Men, Masculinities and Prostate Cancer: Australian and Canadian Patient Perspectives of Communication with Male Physicians' (Qualitative Health Research, 2007), and 'Untangling men’s depression and suicide' (Pursuit, 2019). Oliffe has been honored with the Tier 1 Canada Research Chair, one of Canada's most competitive research awards. He serves on committees including the College of Massage Therapists of British Columbia Patient Relations Committee (since 2017) and the Public Health Agency of Canada advisory committee. His contributions extend to public lectures, webinars, and editorial roles advancing men's health scholarship.
