John Seefeldt is an Associate Professor of Design in the School of Art and Design at Western Carolina University, where he also serves as the Program Coordinator for the Graphic Design B.F.A. program within the David Orr Belcher College of Fine and Performing Arts. He earned his Bachelor of Fine Arts from the University of North Carolina at Asheville and his Master of Fine Arts from Western Carolina University. Before his appointment at Western Carolina University, Seefeldt taught at Loyola University in New Orleans, contributing to the instruction and development in the Department of Art and Design. His career reflects a commitment to design education, blending pedagogical expertise with innovative creative practice in higher education settings.
Seefeldt's research specializations lie in experience and interactive design, guided by a dual foundation of empirical research and speculative design methodologies. His current academic interests explore the integration of advanced interactive media, including virtual reality and augmented reality, with both emerging and traditional fabrication techniques such as those involving wood, metal, clay, and other materials. This approach enables the creation of immersive experiences and physical products that encourage users to develop a more conscious and intentional relationship with their physical environments, social communities, and broader ecological contexts. Seefeldt has extended his influence beyond the classroom through international engagements, including lecturing at Beijing University of Technology and participating in a faculty-student delegation to Beijing, China, to collaborate with university administrators and peers on design and art initiatives. Through these activities, along with his ongoing contributions to program coordination and departmental service, Seefeldt advances the field of design at Western Carolina University and fosters cross-cultural academic dialogues.
