John Stapleton is a lecturer in the Department of Econometrics and Business Statistics within the Faculty of Business and Economics at Monash University. He holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from Trinity College Dublin, a Master of Arts from Queen's University Canada, and a Graduate Diploma in Econometrics. Stapleton has been affiliated with Monash University for over 25 years, commencing as an Assistant Lecturer in the Department of Econometrics and Business Statistics around 1999. In recognition of his long-term dedication, he received the 25 Year Service Award from the Faculty of Business and Economics in 2022. His career at Monash has focused on teaching quantitative methods essential for economics, business, and finance.
Stapleton has served as Chief Examiner and lecturer for several core undergraduate units in econometrics and business statistics. In ETC3450 Applied Time Series Econometrics (chief examiner in 2023 and earlier), students develop skills in modeling, estimation, diagnostic testing, and forecasting using ARIMA models, VARs, and other techniques applied to business and economic data. He has been chief examiner for BEX2410 and ETC2410 Introductory Econometrics (2022 and prior), introducing fundamental concepts such as regression analysis, hypothesis testing, and model specification. Additionally, in ETC2440 Mathematics for Economics and Business (2013 and others), he covers critical mathematical tools including univariate and multivariable calculus, matrix algebra, optimization, and constrained optimization, which are foundational for econometric analysis, economics, finance, and business applications. Other units under his leadership include ETC5345 Applied Time Series Econometrics (2021), ETW2410 Introductory Econometrics (2020), BEX2440 (2022), and ETC3410 Applied Econometrics (2013), emphasizing practical econometric modeling and software use like EViews. Through these contributions, Stapleton has played a key role in equipping students with analytical skills for empirical research in business and economics.
