Rate My Professor John Ussher

John Ussher is a Professor in the Faculty of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences at the University of Alberta. He earned his PhD in Pharmacology from the University of Alberta in 2010, completing his doctoral training in the laboratory of Dr. Gary Lopaschuk. Ussher is also appointed as Associate Adjunct Professor in the Department of Pharmacology in the Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry at the University of Alberta. His research focuses on alterations in nutrient energy metabolism and their contributions to insulin resistance, type 2 diabetes, obesity-associated metabolic disorders, and cardiovascular disease. Specific areas of investigation include ketone metabolism, fatty acid oxidation, cardiac and skeletal muscle metabolism, and potential therapeutic targets for metabolic dysfunction.

Ussher has authored or co-authored numerous peer-reviewed publications on topics such as myocardial fatty acid metabolism, inhibition of de novo ceramide synthesis in diet-induced insulin resistance, targeting intermediary metabolism in the hypothalamus to regulate appetite, and the cardiovascular actions of incretin-based therapies. His work appears in journals including Diabetes, Circulation Research, Cardiovascular Research, and Physiological Reviews. He teaches courses including PHARM 233 – Introduction to Pharmacology 2.
