Great Professor!
Professor John Wheatley is a Clinical Professor of Medicine in the Westmead Clinical School at the University of Sydney, within the Faculty of Medicine and Health. He holds the qualifications MB BS (Hons), PhD, and FRACP. As Director of the Department of Respiratory and Sleep Medicine at Westmead Hospital, he oversees clinical services and research in respiratory disorders and sleep medicine. His career has centered on advancing the understanding and management of sleep-disordered breathing, particularly obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA), continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) therapy, and associated comorbidities such as cardiovascular risks and quality of life impacts.
Professor Wheatley's research specializations include positional OSA, CPAP treatment efficacy, craniofacial factors in sleep apnoea, heart rate variability in OSA patients, and sleep architecture in comorbid conditions like depression and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. Key publications include 'CPAP treatment in REM-related obstructive sleep apnea' (2021), 'Equivalence of Nasal and Oronasal Masks during Initial CPAP Titration' (2011), 'Craniofacial photography for detection of positional obstructive sleep apnoea' (2025), 'Patterns of physical activity in Obstructive Sleep Apnoea and their association with disease severity' (2025), 'Heart rate variability analysis in obstructive sleep apnea patients using automated HRV analysis during REM and NREM sleep' (2024), and 'Symptom Burden of Patients with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease' (2023). He collaborates on the Precision Sleep Medicine (PRISM) program and serves on the Executive Committee of the Sydney Sleep Biobank at the University of Sydney's Charles Perkins Centre. In 2009, he received the Distinguished Achievement Award from the Australasian Sleep Association for exceptional contributions to sleep health and science. Professor Wheatley contributes to the Editorial Advisory Board of Respiratory Medicine Today and has informed guidelines such as the 2024 Australasian Sleep Association guidelines for sleep studies in adults.
