About Maddox
John Maddox is an Associate Professor in the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering at the University of Kentucky's Paducah Extended Campus Program, where he also serves as Director of Undergraduate Studies for Mechanical Engineering within the Stanley and Karen Pigman College of Engineering. He earned his Bachelor of Mechanical Engineering in 2007, Master of Science in Mechanical Engineering in 2010, and Doctor of Philosophy in Mechanical Engineering in 2015, all from Auburn University. Maddox joined the University of Kentucky in 2015 as an Assistant Professor, advancing to Associate Professor in 2021. Before his tenure at UK, he worked as Instructor of Record from 2012 to 2015 and as a Teaching Assistant from 2007 to 2015 at Auburn University.
Maddox's research specializations include electronics thermal management, harsh environment electronics, turbulence modeling, liquid jet impingement, and two-phase flows, with his work supporting UN Sustainable Development Goal 7: Affordable and Clean Energy. His research fingerprint features heat transfer in fibrous insulation materials and thermal conductivity measurements. As a member of the University of Kentucky Center for Computational Sciences, he has produced 28 research outputs, including 19 conference contributions, 3 conference articles, 2 papers, and 2 articles. Key recent publications are 'ISOLATING THE MODES OF HEAT TRANSFER IN FIBROUS INSULATION MATERIALS' with J. D. Senig (Proceedings of the Thermal and Fluids Engineering Summer Conference, 2025, pp. 691-700); 'An Investigation into the Effective Gaseous Thermal Conductivity of Fibrous Insulation Materials' with J. D. Senig (AIAA Aviation Forum and ASCEND, 2024); 'An Orthotropic Thermal Conductivity Measurement in Flexible, Fibrous Insulation Materials' with J. D. Senig (AIAA SciTech Forum and Exposition, 2024); 'Board 144: Work-in-Progress: A Course Collaboration Between Chemical Engineering and Mechanical Engineering' with M. Chwatko, H. C. Ghimire, H. Li, M. Baral, H. T. Hwang, and G. R. Lamas Samanamud (ASEE Annual Conference and Exposition, 2024); and 'A Data-Driven Approach For Real-Time Estimation of Material Uncertainty' with R. Fu, S. Sinha, C. T. Barrow, J. B. Hoagg, and A. Martin (AIAA AVIATION 2022 Forum, 2022). Maddox has participated in 20 projects and grants, serving as Co-Investigator on active initiatives such as NASA EPSCoR: Multi-scale Data-driven Modeling of Radiative Transport Through Thermal Protection Systems (2022-2026), KY EPSCoR FY25 NASA Research Area State Match - SCIENCE (2024-2026), and Advanced Computational Center for Entry System Simulation (ACCESS, 2021-2026).
