About Jon

Professor Jon Berrick is an Honorary Professor at the Sydney Mathematical Research Institute and in the School of Mathematics and Statistics at the University of Sydney. He received his undergraduate degree with first-class honours from the University of Sydney. Berrick held positions in mathematics at the University of Oxford and Imperial College London before joining the National University of Singapore in 1981, where he is now Emeritus Professor. In 2012, he became the inaugural Professor of Science (Mathematics) at Yale-NUS College and served as Head of Studies for Mathematical, Computational and Statistical Sciences. He was the first moderator for Full Faculty Meetings in 2014/15 and chaired the Committee on Integrity and Discipline. Additionally, he holds an Adjunct Professorship at Western Sydney University.

Berrick has published several books and over 70 research papers in mathematics, focusing on algebraic and geometric topology, K-theory, and cohomology of groups. Among his key works are the edited volume Braids: Introductory Lectures on Braids, Configurations and Their Applications (World Scientific, 2010), An Approach to Algebraic K-Theory (Pitman, 1982), Whitehead's asphericity question and its relation to other open problems (2019), The Whitehead conjecture and L²-Betti numbers (2008), and Perfect and acyclic subgroups of finitely presentable groups (2003). He has collaborated on projects in neurophysiology, anatomy, and public health and safety, including tobacco control, lecturing on the topic at Yale-NUS. For his research on the mathematics of braids, Berrick received Singapore’s National Science Award in 2007. Since 2019, he has served as Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of the Australian Mathematical Society, contributing to the dissemination of mathematical research in Australia and beyond. His extensive career and publications underscore his significant influence in algebraic topology and interdisciplinary applications.
