Jon Brotherton is a Professor of Music, Chair of the Music Department, and Director of Choral Activities at Greensboro College. He directs the Chorale, which performs traditional and contemporary choral literature including In the Bleak Midwinter by Jon Brotherton, In Paradisum from the Faure Requiem, Cantate Domino by Hayes, You Shall Go Out with Joy by Edmonds, Dancing on the Edges of Time by Carnahan, and Dona Nobis Pacem by Miller. He also directs the Chamber Singers, a select ensemble performing chamber choral works such as Au Joli Jeu by Clement Janequin, I Am Not Your by Z. Randall Stroupe, Jonah by Rollo Dilworth, My Soul’s Been Anchored by Moses Hogan, Lux Aurumque by Eric Whitacre, and Deep River arranged by Jon Brotherton. Both the Chorale and Chamber Singers annually premiere original compositions and arrangements by Dr. Brotherton. The Men's Ensemble under his direction provides male voices opportunities to sing literature from traditional to contemporary, including “Now that We’re Men” from The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie, I See the Heaven’s Glories Shine by Andrea Ramsey, We’ll Shout and Give Him Glory arranged by Mack Wilberg, and Poor Man Lazrus arranged by Jester Hairston. Additionally, Dr. Brotherton directs the Brass Ensemble, which includes trumpet, french horn, trombone, baritone, euphonium, and tuba, performing Renaissance, Baroque, and 20th-century literature such as Amazing Grace arranged by Jon Brotherton, The Heavens Declare the Glory of God by Benedetto Marcello, High Barbary arranged by Vosbein, and Somewhere Out There by Horner and Frack.
Dr. Brotherton earned his B.A. in vocal performance from George Fox College in Newberg, Oregon, and his M.M. and D.M.A. degrees in choral conducting from the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music. Before joining Greensboro College, he was Director of Choral Activities at Iowa Wesleyan College, Whitman College, and the University of Alaska, Anchorage. He served as Director of Choral Activities and Chorus Master for the Brevard Music Festival in Brevard, North Carolina, and conducted community choral organizations including the Anchorage Concert Chorus and the Cincinnati Choral Society. Currently, he is Director of Music at Jamestown Presbyterian Church and conductor of the Choral Society of Greensboro.
