Professor Jon Huxley is Professor and Head of the School of Veterinary Science at Massey University. He graduated with a Bachelor of Veterinary Medicine from the Royal Veterinary College, University of London in 1995. He completed a PhD at the University of Bristol in 2002 on bovine mastitis and holds diplomas in Cattle Health and Production from the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons and in Bovine Health Management from the European College of Bovine Health Management, both awarded in 2005. He is a Fellow of the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons and a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy.
Prior to joining Massey University in 2018 as Dean and Head of the School of Veterinary Science and Professor of Dairy Cow Health, Professor Huxley worked as a farm animal clinician at Bristol Veterinary School and in commercial practice, specialising in dairy cow health. He was a founding academic staff member at the University of Nottingham’s Veterinary School in 2006, where he contributed to curriculum development. His research focuses on dairy cow population health and welfare, with emphasis on lameness, endemic diseases, and the effects of production systems and housing environments. He has contributed to research awards exceeding $15 million since 2006 and has supervised postgraduate students in his field. In 2018 he was elected a Fellow of the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons for meritorious contributions to clinical practice, and in 2022 he was recognised among the top 2% of most highly cited scientists globally. He serves on the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons Course Accreditation Visitations Panel and has acted as an external examiner at institutions including the Royal Veterinary College and University College Dublin.
