Great Professor!
Jonathan Arthur serves as Conjoint Associate Professor of Bioinformatics at the University of Sydney, with affiliations to the Children's Medical Research Institute and the Faculty of Medicine and Health. He completed his PhD in Theoretical Chemistry at the University of Sydney from 1995 to 1998, followed by postdoctoral training in bioinformatics at the Fox Chase Cancer Center in the United States. During his tenure at the University of Sydney, Arthur held key leadership positions, including Director and CEO of Sydney Bioinformatics, Sesqui Lecturer in Bioinformatics at the Central Clinical School, and Associate Professor for Bioinformatics. He also served as Chief Technology Officer at the Children’s Medical Research Institute. His career trajectory reflects a strong commitment to advancing bioinformatics infrastructure and training within medical research contexts.
Arthur's research specializations include bioinformatics, computational biology, data science, health informatics, proteomics, and personalized medicine. He has authored influential publications such as 'Large-scale comparison of protein sequence alignment algorithms with structure alignments' (2000), 'Gene expression of Pseudomonas aeruginosa in a mucin-containing synthetic growth medium mimicking cystic fibrosis lung sputum' (2010), 'Computational methods for protein identification from mass spectrometry data' (2008), and 'Harvest: an open-source tool for the validation and improvement of genome assemblies' (2016). These works, along with others in gene expression analysis and protein profiling, have collectively amassed over 2,300 citations, underscoring his impact on computational methods in biomedical research. Beyond academia, Arthur contributed to research support as Head of Membership Services at Intersect Australia, leading digital research skills training and data analytics. Currently, as Associate Director of Operations and Strategic Partnerships at Australian BioCommons, he continues to foster partnerships and strategic initiatives in bioinformatics while maintaining his conjoint role at Sydney. His expertise drives evidence-based strategies and people-centered leadership in biotechnology and research services.
