Jonathan Gibson is Chair and Professor in the Art Department at Xavier University, having joined the faculty in 2006 and been promoted to full professor in the 2019-2020 academic year. He earned a BFA in Painting from Brigham Young University in 2004 and an MFA in Painting from Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, New York, in 2006. Gibson teaches 2D Design, Graphic Design, and Photography, with expertise extending to Game Design. His professional interests include painting, design, and photography.
Gibson's research interests encompass the formation of personal and cultural identity in relation to commercial imagery, ancestry and identity, and the act of seeing itself. He also focuses on innovation, the processes of creativity, and collaborating with other departments and disciplines. As Taskforce Member of the Center for Innovation, he supports interdisciplinary initiatives. Gibson has led service-learning courses, including ARTS 315-01 Advanced Web Design titled 'Opening Doors, Digitally,' partnering with the Intercommunity Justice & Peace Center to digitize photographs, newspaper articles, and narratives. He presented 'Living History: AI and The After Life' at the Faculty Showcase during Week of Research. Additionally, he serves on the Digital Media Services Advisory Board and contributes to the Sedler Center for Experiential Learning and Xavier Element programs, advancing experiential and community-engaged education in the arts.
