About Jonathan

Jonathan Klaaren is Professor of Law and Society at the University of the Witwatersrand in Johannesburg, South Africa. He holds appointments in the School of Law at the Faculty of Commerce, Law and Management and at the Wits Institute for Social and Economic Research (WiSER) in the Faculty of Humanities. He teaches, researches, and writes in the areas of human rights, competition law, and socio-legal studies. His qualifications include a BA Hons, LLB from Wits, an MA, a JD from Columbia University, and a PhD in sociology from Yale University.

Klaaren served as Director of the Mandela Institute from 2005 to 2007 and as Head of the School of Law from 2010 to 2013. In 2016 he was appointed as an Acting Judge of the High Court of South Africa (South Gauteng). His monograph From Prohibited Immigrants to Citizens: The Origins of Citizenship and Nationality in South Africa was published in 2017. His research interests include the African legal profession and access to justice, competition policy and economic regulation, and migration law. He has served on editorial committees and boards including those of the South African Journal on Human Rights, Law & Society Review, and Law & Policy.
