Dr. Jong Boon Ooi is a Senior Lecturer in Mechanical Engineering at the School of Engineering, Monash University Malaysia. He holds a PhD from Monash University Malaysia awarded in 2017, a Master of Engineering Science from Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman in 2013, and a Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) in Mechanical Engineering from Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman in 2009. He is registered as a Professional Engineer with the Board of Engineers Malaysia, a Chartered Engineer with the Engineering Council UK, and a Member of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers UK. Dr. Ooi serves as Course Director for the Bachelor of Sustainable Energy Technology, Final Year Project Chief Examiner at the School of Engineering, Adjunct Professor at UCSI University, and an active committee member of the IMechE Malaysia Branch. He heads the Combustion and Fuel research team under the Energy and Sustainability platform, focusing on multidisciplinary studies involving engineering and science students.
Dr. Ooi's research specializations include nanomaterial fuel additives such as carbon-based and boron-based nanoparticles to enhance combustion performance, development of low-carbon fuel blends from renewable sources like vegetable oils, agricultural waste, tires, and plastics, fundamental combustion science in co-flow and counterflow diffusion flames, advanced optimisation using machine learning, response surface methodology, and genetic algorithms, hydrogen and ammonia combustion, sustainable integrated energy systems with exergy and life-cycle assessments, and heat transfer in microchannels and graphene systems. He has authored and co-authored over 38 international journal papers and secured competitive research funding from Petronas Research, Air Force Office of Scientific Research, Fundamental Research Grant Scheme, and industry partners. Key publications encompass 'Graphite oxide nanoparticle as a diesel fuel additive for cleaner emissions and lower fuel consumption' (Energy & Fuels, 2016), 'Effects of graphite oxide and single-walled carbon nanotubes as diesel additives on the performance, combustion, and emission characteristics of a light-duty diesel engine' (Energy, 2018), 'Advanced optimization of a biogas-based multigeneration multi effect distillation system...' (Desalination, 2026), and 'Ammonia borane as a hydrogen-rich additive for cleaner and enhanced combustion of Biodiesel–Diesel Blends' (International Journal of Hydrogen Energy, 2026). He contributes as an Editorial Board Member for Scientific Reports, Discover Energy, Energy Research Journal, and Oxford Open Energy, and has reviewed over 40 articles for leading journals. Dr. Ooi has earned the Dean's Education Excellence Award 2025 in the Citation Category for outstanding contributions to student learning, along with multiple student feedback survey awards and an Award for Excellence in Education 2025 Certificate of Commendation.
