About Joris

Joris Larik is Associate Professor of Comparative, EU and International Law at Leiden University, affiliated with Leiden University College The Hague (LUC) in the Faculty of Governance and Global Affairs and the Europa Institute of Leiden Law School. Since July 2025, he serves as Director of Education at LUC, marking his tenth anniversary there. He earned a PhD from the European University Institute, an MA from the College of Europe, an LLM from Leiden Law School, and a BA from the Zentrum für Internationale Studien at TU Dresden. Throughout his career, Larik has taught courses for ten years at LUC and the Faculty of Law, convened the International Justice major for seven years, chaired university committees, participated in the Young Academy Leiden, and co-founded the Global Governance Innovation Network (GGIN).

Larik's research focuses on EU external relations law, comparative foreign relations law, EU constitutional law, public international law, and global governance, encompassing topics such as Brexit, foreign policy, geopolitics, and international justice. Key publications include his monograph Foreign Policy Objectives in European Constitutional Law (Oxford University Press, 2016), co-edited volume EU External Relations Law: Text, Cases and Materials (Hart Publishing, second edition 2020), and Just Security in an Undergoverned World (Oxford University Press, 2018). He has published in prestigious journals including the European Journal of International Law, American Journal of International Law, Common Market Law Review, and Journal of European Integration. Notable awards and fellowships comprise the Fulbright-Schuman Fellowship at Johns Hopkins SAIS (2017/18), Netherlands Institute for Advanced Study (NIAS) Research Fellowship (2020/21), and Prize for Transformative Futures in Peace and Security from the Geneva Centre for Security Policy (2023). He serves on the Committee on European Integration of the Dutch Advisory Council on International Affairs (appointed 2022), the Governing Board of the Centre for the Law of EU External Relations (CLEER), as Global Forum Editor of Global Governance: A Review of Multilateralism and International Organizations, and editor of Netherlands Yearbook of International Law. Appointed by the European Commission to the pool of arbitrators (2022), Larik delivers public lectures such as the Havel-Cleveringa Lecture 'The Geopoliticisation of Europe' (2026) and provides policy advice and media commentary on EU trade agreements and global governance.
