About Jos

Jos C. N. Raadschelders is a professor in the John Glenn College of Public Affairs at The Ohio State University, where he joined as faculty in 2011. He has served as Faculty Director of Professional Development Programs since 2018 and as Associate Dean for Faculty Development from 2013 to 2023. Previously, he was Professor in the Department of Political Science at the University of Oklahoma (2001-2011), holding the Henry Bellmon Chair of Public Service, and Assistant/Associate Professor in Public Administration at the University of Leiden (1983-1998). He holds a Ph.D. in Social Sciences (1990), M.A. in History with minors in public administration and international relations (1982), both from the University of Leiden, and a B.A. in History and Textiles from Teachers College, Delft (1979). He remains affiliated as full professor with Leiden University.

Raadschelders' research focuses on public administration theories, the history of government, comparative government, and civil service systems, exploring the structure and function of governments historically and comparatively, alongside the epistemology and ontology of public administration. He has published over 140 articles and book chapters, and authored or co-edited books such as "The Three Ages of Government: From the Person, to the Group, to the World" (2020), "Mastering Public Administration from Max Weber to Dwight Waldo" (4th ed., 2023), "Introduction to Governance, Government and Public Administration" (2023), "Foundations of Public Administration" (co-authored with Richard J. Stillman II, 2016), and "Global Dimensions of Public Administration and Governance" (co-authored with Eran Vigoda-Gadot, 2015). A Fellow of the National Academy of Public Administration since 2014, he was Managing Editor of Public Administration Review (2006-2011) and serves as Co-Editor-in-Chief (2024-2026). He teaches undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral courses on public affairs, policy processes, and foundations of the discipline, and has served on numerous university committees and contributed to NAPA white papers on civil service reform.
