About Joseph

Joseph A. Alutto is a Distinguished Professor Emeritus of Organizational Behavior at The Ohio State University’s Max M. Fisher College of Business within the Business & Economics faculty. He earned his BBA in business administration from Manhattan College in 1962, MA in industrial relations from the University of Illinois in 1965, and PhD in organizational behavior from Cornell University in 1968. Alutto’s career began at the State University of New York at Buffalo, where he joined the faculty in the Department of Organization and Human Resources in 1966, advanced to full professor, chaired the PhD program, served as associate dean, and was dean of the School of Management from 1976 to 1990. As the Clarence S. Marsh Professor of Management, he pioneered the first Sino-U.S. jointly funded MBA program in China in 1984, expanded international programs, secured significant funding, improved rankings, and increased research support. In 1991, he became dean of Ohio State’s Max M. Fisher College of Business for 16 years, holding the John W. Berry, Sr. Chair in Business from 1999. He led the design, fundraising exceeding $119 million, and construction of a six-building campus and graduate housing, elevated undergraduate and MBA program rankings, grew executive education, and expanded global initiatives.

From 1998, Alutto served as executive dean for OSU’s professional colleges, coordinating activities across engineering, food, agricultural and environmental sciences, education and human ecology, law, and social work. He was executive vice president and provost from 2007 to 2013, the second-longest serving in university history, overseeing all academic functions, and acted as interim president twice, from July to October 2007 and July 2013 to June 2014. A leading authority on managerial behavior, his research interests include leadership dynamics, organizational structure, Sino-U.S. joint ventures, human resources management, ethics, and business education. He coauthored Theory Testing in Organizational Behavior: The Variant Approach (Prentice-Hall, 1984) and published more than 65 articles in journals such as Administrative Science Quarterly, Academy of Management Journal, Journal of Applied Psychology, and Industrial and Labor Relations Review. Alutto lectured widely in China, advised the Dalian Behavioral Sciences Association, served as first international dean for Dalian University School of Business and visiting professor at Zhejiang University, consulted for banks, manufacturing, aerospace, health care, and education sectors, and held board positions including Columbia Gas of Ohio and M/I Homes. Awards include the National Award for Outstanding Contributions to the Economic Modernization of China (1989), Honorary Doctorate of Humane Letters from Manhattan College (1996), and presidency of the American Assembly of Collegiate Schools of Business (1996-1998).
