Associate Professor Joseph Goh serves as Associate Professor of Gender Studies in the School of Arts and Social Sciences at Monash University Malaysia. He holds a PhD in Gender, Sexuality and Theology from Monash University Malaysia awarded in 2015, a Graduate Certificate in Higher Education from the same institution awarded in 2018, a Master of Theology and Licentiate in Sacred Theology from the Jesuit School of Theology of Santa Clara University awarded in 2010. Before entering academia full-time, he was Programme Manager for the Voluntary HIV Counselling and Testing Programme at the Community Health Care Centre of PT Foundation in Kuala Lumpur from 2010 to 2011. At Monash University Malaysia, Goh progressed from Lecturer in Gender Studies from 2016 to 2018, to Senior Lecturer from 2019, and now holds the position of Associate Professor. He also serves as Honours Coordinator and School Equity, Diversity and Inclusion Representative.
Goh's academic interests focus on constructions of gendered, sexed and sexual subjects intersecting with citizenship, law, sociocultural values, ethnicity, religion, ability and age; formations of LGBTIQA+ genders, sexes and sexualities in hybrid local and transnational contexts; historical productions of gender diversity; grassroots activism among diverse gender and sexual communities; physical health, neurodiversity and workplace issues for LGBTIQA+ people; masculinities among assigned male and female at birth subjects; and queer and trans theorising and theologising. He is author of books such as Becoming a Malaysian Trans Man: Gender, Society, Body and Faith (Palgrave Macmillan, 2020) and Living out Sexuality and Faith: Body Admissions of Malaysian Gay and Bisexual Men (Routledge, 2018), and co-editor of Unlocking Orthodoxies for Inclusive Theologies: Queer Alternatives (Routledge, 2020) and Queering Migrations Towards, From, and Beyond Asia (Palgrave Macmillan, 2014). Key recent publications include 'Everyday precarity, oblique hostility and gendered liveability among Malaysian transgender men' (Journal of Gender Studies, 2023), 'Malaysian Roman Catholic transgender men, simultaneous failures in gender and religion, and customisations of spirituality and ethical living' (Religions, 2023), and 'The pursuit of deviant happiness and queer spiritual well-being among Malaysian gay men: a theological proposal' (Feminist Theology, 2024). His awards include the Pro-Vice Chancellor's Excellence in Diversity & Inclusion Award (2022, with colleagues), Sheila Cunnison Prize (2023), and Vice-Chancellor's Diversity and Inclusion Award (2018, with colleagues). Goh sits on editorial boards for the Queer and Trans Intersection book series (University of Wales Press), Queer Asia book series (Hong Kong University Press), and QTR: A Journal of Queer and Transgender Studies in Religion (Duke University Press). Through his scholarship, he promotes education, research and engagement for empowerment, social transformation and thriving communities.
