About Julie

Professor Julie Hall is the Vice-Chancellor and Chief Executive of London Metropolitan University, having taken up the post in August 2024. She previously served as Deputy Vice-Chancellor and Provost at the same institution from February 2022. Julie was appointed Professor of Higher Education in 2016. Born in Birmingham, she attended Kingston University through clearing, graduating with a BA in Modern Arts in 1981 as the first in her family to attend university. She later completed a Post Graduate Certificate in Teaching and a Masters in Urban Education at King’s College London while working as a part-time lecturer.

Julie began her career teaching at South West London College of Higher Education and became a course leader at London Guildhall University. She served as chair of the Staff and Educational Development Association (SEDA) in the 1990s, contributing to the development of the Higher Education Academy and the Professional Standards Framework. At Roehampton University, she held roles including Director of Learning and Teaching, led the Research Office, served as interim Dean of the Business School, and ended her time there as Pro Vice-Chancellor. She received a National Teaching Fellowship for projects addressing awarding gaps and student engagement. At Solent University Southampton from 2017, she served as Deputy Vice-Chancellor, contributing to a gold TEF award and a successful collaborative bid for a Maritime Skills Institute of Technology. Her 2005 publication, Tell It Like It Is: How Our Schools Fail Black Children, addressed educational inequalities. She holds a Principal Fellowship from Advance HE and has served on various boards and advisory groups in higher education and related sectors.
