Professor Julie Simpson is Professor of Biostatistics and Head of the Biostatistics Unit at the Melbourne School of Population and Global Health, Faculty of Medicine, Dentistry and Health Sciences, University of Melbourne. She earned a PhD from the Open University, a Postgraduate Diploma in Statistics from the University of Cambridge, and a Bachelor's Degree from the University of Melbourne. With 30 years of experience as a biostatistician in clinical and population health research, her career includes positions at St Thomas's Hospital in London, the Mahidol-Oxford Research Programme in Thailand, the University of Aberdeen, and Cancer Council Victoria, prior to joining the University of Melbourne in 2005. She currently serves as Director of the Methods and Implementation Support for Clinical and Health research (MISCH) Hub and Visiting Professor at the University of Oxford's Centre for Tropical Medicine and Global Health. She is also Co-Director of the Melbourne Centre for Clinical Trials.
Professor Simpson's research specializes in integrating biostatistics with mathematical modelling to optimize infectious disease control, particularly malaria treatment and elimination strategies. Her contributions have led to revised antimalarial dosing recommendations and enhanced pharmacokinetic-pharmacodynamic study designs. She advises the World Health Organization, Medicines for Malaria Venture, and Infectious Diseases Data Observatory on antimalarial regimens. Elected Fellow of the Australian Academy of Health and Medical Sciences (FAHMS) in 2024, she holds NHMRC Investigator Leadership Grants (2021-2025 and 2026-2030) and received the 2020 Australian Epidemiological Association Mentoring Award. Author of over 350 peer-reviewed publications with more than 32,000 citations, her work advances methodologies for handling missing data and supports statistical training in health research.
