June Ahn is a Professor of Learning Sciences and Research-Practice Partnerships in the School of Education at the University of California, Irvine, and Senior Associate Dean of Academic Personnel. He earned a Ph.D. in Urban Education Policy from the University of Southern California in 2010, a Master’s degree in Computing and Education from Columbia University in 2006, and a B.A. in Computers in Education from Brown University in 2003. Early in his career, Ahn taught sixth-grade mathematics during summers, computer science at Lincoln School for Girls, and served as Director of Technology at Mayfield Junior School. He held faculty positions at the University of Maryland from 2010 to 2016, advancing to Associate Professor and directing the Human-Computer Interaction Lab in the College of Information Studies and College of Education; at New York University’s Steinhardt School from 2016 to 2018 as Associate Professor; and joined UCI in 2018, where he directs the Design & Partnership Lab and the Orange County Educational Advancement Network.
Ahn specializes in using technology, data, and participatory design to foster equitable learning opportunities, particularly in STEM fields through research-practice partnerships. His research interests include learning technologies, human-computer interaction, educational technology, and data analytics in education. Select publications are “Co-designing for privacy, transparency, and trust in k-12 learning analytics” (2021), “Designing in context: Reaching beyond usability in learning analytics dashboard design” (2019), “Science Everywhere: Designing public, tangible displays to connect youth learning across settings” (2018), and “Student enrollment patterns and achievement in Ohio’s online charter schools” (2017). He has received the 2023 Chancellor’s Faculty Award for Undergraduate Mentorship at UCI, the 2024 Carnegie Corporation of New York Profiles in Collective Leadership award, and the 2011 Best Dissertation Award from USC’s Rossier School of Education, among several best paper awards. Ahn has secured funding from the National Science Foundation, Institute of Education Sciences, Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, and others for projects such as Playful Learning Landscapes ($2,574,937, NSF, 2020-2024) and Career Pathways for Research in Learning and Education, Analytics and Data Science ($1,560,000, IES, 2021-2026), contributing significantly to advancing educational research and practice.
